About William Shakespeare: William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor, universally acknowledged as one of the greatest writers in the English language. Known as England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon,” his works comprise 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and several other verses. His plays have been translated into every major living language and continue to be performed more frequently than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children. Between 1585 and 1592, he embarked on a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of the playing company Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later known as the King’s Men. He retired to Stratford at age 49 and died three years later. Despite the scant details of his private life, Shakespeare’s influence on literature and the English language is unparalleled. Historical Context: Shakespeare’s works, published in various editions during his lifetime, were collated posthumously in the First Folio of 1623 by his friends John Heminge and Henry Condell. This definitive edition has cemented his legacy, with Ben Jonson’s preface famously proclaiming Shakespeare as “not of an age, but for all time.” This collectible volume, with its Temple Notes and extensive content, offers a unique glimpse into the genius of William Shakespeare, making it a must-have for any serious collector or enthusiast of classic literature.
