Darkness and Dawn or Scenes in the Days of Nero: An Historic Tale By F.W. Farrar Published in 1898 by Longmans, Green, and Co. This 1898 edition is bound in black cloth with gold gilt lettering on the spine and a decorative design on the front panel. The book has some wear consistent with its age, including a full seam split between the front pastedown and endpaper, bumping to all four corners, and noticeable wear to the head and foot of the spine (see photos for further detail). It comprises 594 pages. In the preface, Frederic William Farrar explains that Darkness and Dawn explores the shift from the "darkness" of a declining Pagan world to the "dawn" of Christianity. Set during the reign of Emperor Nero, the narrative draws from both Pagan and Christian history, with historical events shaping the storyline more than the characters themselves. Farrar masterfully combines historical accuracy with rich storytelling, providing readers with a vivid portrayal of this critical time in Western history. About the Author: Frederic William Farrar (1831–1903) was a renowned cleric, educator, and author. Born in Bombay, India, Farrar had a distinguished career within the Church of England. He was Archdeacon of Westminster from 1883 to 1894, and later, Dean of Canterbury Cathedral until his death in 1903. Farrar's literary and academic accomplishments were complemented by his association with notable figures such as Charles Darwin—he served as a pallbearer at Darwin's funeral in 1882. A member of the Cambridge Apostles secret society, Farrar was well-connected in intellectual circles. His works often explored religious themes, and his background in education and theology is evident in the depth of his writings, including this historic tale set in the early days of Christianity. Darkness and Dawn stands as a significant example of Farrar’s ability to weave historical fact with engaging narrative, offering readers not only an insight into the Roman Empire but also the early Christian world.
